"Sarpang is a district of immense strategic and economic significance located in the southern foothills of Bhutan, bordering the Indian state of Assam. At its heart lies Gelephu, a vibrant border town that serves as one of the kingdom's four official road entry points for international travelers entering from India. The region is currently undergoing a historic and profound transformation as the primary site of the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a Special Administrative Region (SAR) established under a Royal Charter and envisioned by His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Spanning over 2,600 square kilometers, which represents approximately five percent of Bhutan's total landmass, GMC is designed as a highly autonomous hub operating under a One Country, Two Systems framework. This visionary project seeks to blend traditional Bhutanese values of spirituality and harmony with nature with the dynamism of global technology, innovation, and commerce. Often referred to as a People's Project, GMC aims to create a global destination for Mindful Prosperity, focusing on eight core industries including spiritual wellness, green energy, agri-tech, finance, and aviation. A cornerstone of this ambitious infrastructure development is the construction of the Gelephu International Airport, which officially commenced in July 2025 to establish a direct and vital aviation link between Bhutan and the global community. The district's deep spiritual foundations are symbolized by the Gelephu Chorten, a stupa modeled after the legendary Jarung Khashor Stupa in Kathmandu, reflecting the region's high spiritual aspirations. Travelers entering through Sarpang can experience the unique geographical transition from the low-lying plains to the foothills while benefiting from the government's special policy offering a 24-hour Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) waiver for those visiting border towns, which encourages short-term cultural exchange and economic activity. With its lush subtropical climate, Sarpang offers a distinct environmental perspective within Bhutan, where warm tropical breezes meet the beginning of the pristine Himalayan wilderness. As a strategic land bridge connecting the billions of people in South and Southeast Asia, the region is poised to become a global beacon of sustainable innovation. Visitors to Sarpang are invited to witness the birth of a future global hub that meticulously balances rapid modernization with the kingdom's deeply held traditional beliefs and its commitment to remaining a carbon-negative society."
